Substance over Style; Why pronunciation matters much more than accent.

Accents have been described variously as quirky, cute, sexy even. While accents can add an additional dimension to spoken English, poor pronunciation reduces comprehension and inhibits communication. Before I became an ESL tutor, I used to conflate accent and pronunciation and for many teachers there remains some confusion between the two. For international business professionals, the goal of English language tuition is not to eliminate your accent, but to improve your pronunciation. An accent reflects your identity, culture and linguistic background. Everyone has an accent, including native English speakers, and there is no single "correct" way to sound. Effective communication depends not on sounding British or American, but on being understood clearly and confidently.

Pronunciation focuses on the clarity of individual sounds, word stress, sentence rhythm and intonation. When these features are accurate, your speech becomes easier to understand in meetings, presentations, interviews and everyday professional interactions. Clear pronunciation reduces misunderstandings, increases confidence and allows you to express your ideas with greater authority.

Attempting to lose your accent is often unrealistic and unnecessary. In today's global workplace, English is an international language spoken by people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Successful communication is based on intelligibility, not imitation. Professionals who speak clearly while retaining their natural accent are often viewed as authentic, confident and effective communicators.

My coaching therefore concentrates on developing clear, natural pronunciation and confident spoken English. The objective is to help you communicate successfully in international business environments, ensuring that your message—not your accent—is what people remember.
